the dark garden (Twickenham)
This dark urban retreat project added biodiversity net gain and removed a plastic turf inherited when the owner bought the property.
The homeowners loved entertaining but were embarrassed about the plastic turf in the garden of the home they moved into.
It felt out of sync with their understanding that they could add more nature to their neighborhood.
In addition, they wanted to have an aesthetically stunning garden as dark as possible in materials, and featuring art pieces from the artist Hannah Bennett.
I proposed a dark gravel garden with staggered dark clay pavers,, surrounded by drought-resistant native planting that re-used their existing olive trees..
The new landscape provides visual depth and dimension while still offering durability and practicality for busy lifestyles. Dark gravel pathways guide guests to intimate seating nooks nestled under trees and pergolas. Bold foliage adds texture and interest.
The moody palette creates a modern, sophisticated look perfect for dinner parties, sun-downer cocktails or just quiet evenings at home. Gone is the artificial grass - now a natural sanctuary for connection and rejuvenation takes its place.
The tranquil space also reflects the homeowners' values around sustainability. It attracts local pollinators while requiring little water usage once established.
